What is Microsuction?
When you book an appointment with Earworx, your ears will be cleaned using the safe and effective microsuction technique. At Earworx clinics, micro-suction and curettage is performed by qualified, Registered Nurses to assist people who are suffering from excessive earwax or earwax impaction. All Earworx Clinic Managers have completed a nationally accredited Earworx Course in Aural Care and an extensive practical placement in order to learn how to safely perform the microsuction and curettage procedure.
The procedure involves the use of small instruments and gentle suction to remove wax blockages under direct observation with ‘loupes’; binocular glasses fitted with a bright light to maintain direct vision into your ears at all times.
Microsuction is a water free, safe and effective way to remove excess ear wax. Along with curettage and the use of fine instruments, microsuction is the wax removal method used by Ear Nose and Throat surgeons.
This procedure is available in Earworx clinics which enables the avoidance of at-home remedies such as cotton buds which can often push wax further down the ear canal, worsening symptoms.
The Microsuction Procedure
1. QuestionnaireTo begin with, you will be asked a series of questions about your ear history and presenting symptoms in a safe and confidential environment. This will provide your nurse insight into your ears and whatever problems you are currently facing.
A speculum will be inserted gently into your ear to allow an examination of the ear canal and eardrum to occur with loupes. Should enough wax be present to prevent examination of the eardrum, a recommendation of wax removal will be made. The procedure will be explained and an opportunity to ask questions provided.
3. Ear wax removal
Wax blockages will be removed by using either small instruments such as curettes and forceps, or via the gentle microsuction technique. The ear wax extraction procedure is pain-free, gentle and completely dry to ensure that no unwanted moisture gets trapped within your ears.
