How the Earworx Procedure Works
At Earworx Nowra, earwax is removed by Registered Nurses using microsuction, a dry technique that uses controlled suction while the nurse watches the ear canal under magnification. Your nurse will assess your ears first and talk you through whether microsuction is right for you before anything goes ahead.
Please Note: Earworx Nowra sees children aged 4 years and older. Children need to be able to follow directions and keep reasonably still. Your nurse will assess whether the procedure is suitable for your child, and a parent or guardian must attend or provide written consent. A discussion with Earworx staff is recommended before booking.
Step 1: Professional Assessment
- Visual examination of both ears using magnifying loupes
- Ear canal assessment to check whether wax is the cause of your symptoms
- Suitability check before any procedure begins, including your ear history
- A conversation about your symptoms, any drops you have tried and any questions you have
Step 2: Microsuction
- Water-free removal using microsuction equipment
- Suction draws wax out of the ear canal
- Instrumentation such as curette or microforceps where your nurse judges it appropriate
- Direct visualisation so the nurse can see the ear canal throughout
- Step-by-step explanation from your RN, with the option to pause at any time
- You may notice a loud whooshing sound and, for some people, a cool sensation or brief light-headedness
Step 3: Appointment Aftercare
- A summary of what your nurse found and what was done
- Aftercare advice for looking after your ears at home
- Your nurse will advise whether any follow-up is needed, including when to see your GP
- Hearing services on site at Hearing Australia Nowra if a hearing check is suggested
Is Professional Ear Care Right for You?
Earwax is natural, and for most people the ears clear it on their own. Sometimes it builds up and needs a hand, which is when professional ear cleaning in Nowra is worth considering.
Signs Your Ears Might Need Attention
Are you noticing any of these?
- Muffled hearing – like you are underwater or wearing earplugs
- A full or blocked feeling that does not go away
- Itching or discomfort inside the ear
These symptoms can have causes other than earwax. A registered nurse can check whether wax is the cause and explain your options, including when it is best to see a GP.
Who’s Most at Risk for Earwax Buildup?
Some people are more prone to earwax build-up than others. Across Shoalhaven, a few everyday factors come up often:
Time in the water: Regular swimming, surfing, diving or boating around Jervis Bay, the Shoalhaven River and the coastline can leave moisture in the ear canal and change how wax moves.
Work and the outdoors: Dusty work on farms, building sites and workshops, along with roles that call for earplugs, earmuffs or headsets, can trap wax in the ear canal.
Daily habits: Earbuds and hearing aids sit in the ear canal for long periods, which can slow the ear’s natural cleaning. If you wear hearing aids, let your nurse know at your appointment.
Common mistakes: Avoid using cotton buds to “clean” your ears, as they may push wax deeper. Ear candles and other DIY methods are also best avoided.
Natural factors: Genetics influence how much wax you make, narrow or curved ear canals make it harder for wax to clear, and earwax tends to become drier and harder with age.
