About Earworx Mornington
Earworx Mornington offers nurse-led earwax removal on the Mornington Peninsula, from a shared space inside Hearing Australia on Main Street. Every appointment is with a Registered Nurse who has completed Earworx microsuction training, and wax is removed using microsuction and instrumentation.
Founded by Registered Nurse, Lisa Hellwege, in 2016, Earworx now operates clinics across Australia. Sharing a front door with Hearing Australia means ear care and hearing services are both on Main Street, so if your nurse recommends a hearing assessment, there is no need to travel elsewhere.
The clinic is a handy option for people living in Mount Martha, Mount Eliza, Moorooduc, Tuerong, Somerville and across the Peninsula.

How the Earworx Procedure Works
Every appointment at Earworx Mornington uses microsuction: a fine suction tip lifts earwax out while your nurse views the ear canal through magnifying loupes. Your nurse checks your ears first and lets you know whether microsuction is a suitable option for you.
Please Note: Children aged 4 years and over are welcome at Earworx Mornington. Children need to be able to follow simple directions and sit reasonably still, so please talk with the Earworx team before booking. Your nurse will assess whether the procedure is suitable for your child, and a parent or guardian must attend or provide written consent.
Step 1: Professional Ear Check
- Magnified look inside both ears using loupes
- Assessment of the ear canal and any wax present
- Suitability check covering your ear history and any previous procedures
- Time to talk about your symptoms and anything you would like to ask
Step 2: Wax Removal by Microsuction
- Dry removal, with no water flushed into the ear
- Suction guided by your nurse
- Instrumentation such as a curette or microforceps where your nurse judges it appropriate.
- Clear view of the ear canal for the whole procedure
- Running explanation from your nurse, and you can ask to stop at any point
- What to expect: suction sounds loud close to the ear, and some people feel a cool sensation or a moment of dizziness
Step 3: Before You Leave
- An explanation of what your nurse found
- Practical tips for caring for your ears at home
- Advice on whether a follow-up visit or a GP review is needed
- Hearing Australia Mornington on site if a hearing assessment is recommended
Is Professional Ear Care Right for You?
Ears are designed to clean themselves, and most of the time earwax works its way out without any help. When it doesn’t, booking ear cleaning in Mornington with a Registered Nurse is worth considering.
Symptoms To Watch For
Have you noticed any of the following?
- Dull or muffled sound, as if your ears are plugged
- A blocked or full sensation in one or both ears
- Irritated or itchy ears that keep bothering you
Earwax is one possible cause of these symptoms, but not the only one. A registered nurse can check whether wax is the cause, explain what they see, and let you know if a visit to your GP is needed.
Who’s Most at Risk for Earwax Buildup?
Some people simply make more wax, or clear it less easily. On the Peninsula, a few everyday factors can play a part:
Life on the bay: Swimming at Mothers Beach and along Port Phillip Bay, sailing out of Mornington harbour, snorkelling and diving can all leave water sitting in the ear canal, which softens wax and can make it clump.
Outdoor work and hobbies: Gardening, outdoor work in the Peninsula hinterland, and trades on building sites bring dust and debris close to the ears, while earmuffs and earplugs can stop wax moving out naturally.
Earbuds and hearing aids: Anything worn in the ear canal for hours at a time interrupts the ear’s natural clearing. If you wear hearing aids, let your nurse know at your appointment.
Habits to avoid: Cotton buds tend to push wax further in rather than remove it. Ear candles, hairpins and other DIY tools are best left alone too.
Things you can’t change: Your genes influence how much wax you produce, narrow or curved ear canals make it harder for wax to escape, and wax often becomes drier and firmer as we get older.
