What’s Involved in the Earworx Procedure?

Earworx is a naturally occurring substance that our bodies produce to help protect our ears. Earwax acts as a protective barrier to prevent foreign bodies and infections from entering our ear canal. However, in some cases, the body can produce too much earwax or wax can become lodged and impacted inside the ear. This can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms.

Earworx use the safe and gentle micro-suction technique to remove excess and impacted earwax. Our registered nurse Denise will begin your appointment by carefully examining the inside of your ears, using specialised glasses called loupes. If she determines that a removal is required, she will begin the process of extracting your excess earwax using micro-suction.

Micro-suction works like a tiny vacuum, sucking out earwax from the ear canal. It is completely dry and appropriate for people who suffer from ear infections. It also fast and gentle for the patient, taking only 30 minutes.

Symptoms of Excess Earwax

How do you know if you need an earwax removal procedure? There are several symptoms associated with excess or impacted earwax. You may feel an uncomfortable full sensation inside your ears, or a constant feeling that they are blocked. Your ears may feel itchy or sore. Some people experience ringing in the ear, loss of hearing, and even dizziness and vertigo.

Some people are more susceptible to excess earwax than others. If you feel you often produce too much wax, it could be that you are genetically predisposed to do so. Some activities also promote earwax production, such as swimming and diving, using hearing aids, wearing headphones for prolonged periods, or working in dirty environments.

It’s important that you don’t try to clear your blocked ears yourself. Putting instruments such as cotton buds inside the ear can make the problem worse, pushing the earwax deeper and casing impaction. Always work with a professional for clearing your ears.
